To answer this question, it’s probably best that I share with you a defining moment, and a resulting “compelling story”, that brought me to where I am today – coaching parents like you on exactly what to do to develop a customized sleep plan and strategy that honours your little ones needs and helps them develop a more sound sleep schedule. That defining moment in my life happened in December of 2013.
I have two young boys and right from the get-go I knew our sleep was going to be impacted as our new roles as parents. My husband and I were clearly committed to honouring the strategy of assuring our child had and amazing sleep training experience. I thought I knew all I needed to know about eating and sleeping needs of a newborn…I read book after book and knew that mastering this work was going to be instrumental to all of our wellbeing. Around 3-4 weeks old, Dax was fighting everything and anything that you can think of. He was perpetually crying and it made me feel so defeated and depleted. Especially since I thought I had it all figured out!! I distinctly remember taking a video of this never ending crying little baby and sending it to my sister. My husband came home from his shift work and we made a BIG decision to try a bottle of formula. Insert gasp here!!! I was trying so hard to breastfeed and I thought that I was doing best by my baby to breastfeed. Insert emotional defeat! I thought I was not doing right by my baby to offer formula as we all know that “breast is best”. What I soon seen and realized, was that, what was best for my baby was not what I thought and I had to make some mindset changes. “My baby is ok to have formula, it’s not going to harm him in any way, and it’s ok that I am not being his sole provider!!” When we first gave Dax that first bottle, it was the very FIRST 3 hour stretch of sleep he had since joining our family!! We starting digging more into learning about sleep cue and hunger cues. When this goes unmanaged and child’s wake windows are unmanaged, things can roll off the tracks. I was reading books, but had no physical help to help us adapt this work to our specific family unit. Over the next 9 months, we worked and adjusted as best as we could to get our baby on a sleep schedule that benefited him and ultimately, my husband and I as well. There was a lot of learning and trial and error with Dax.
When I had my second baby, and we thought the path would be so much more clear…and it was! After we started sleep training, we could see the instant impact. Spencer was happier, more active and way more alert and ready to go! This was proof in the pudding – our little one’s life and well being was intensely increased by honouring the need for healthy sleep patterns. Heck – our entire family unit was more well rested and ready to be more present in our moments together. And to kick it off, it took us only two weeks instead of 9 months. BINGO!!
I had followed the Sleep Sense Program closely when I had Spencer and was floored that I could actually hire a sleep consultant and very quickly and clearly knew that I could walk this path and use my learning to deeply serve and honour the needs of parents just like me. When I enrolled in the Sleep Sense program, my second son was 4 months old and I left for the next training session in Sarasota Florida by the time Spencer was only 7 months old. BEST DECISION! As I went through this program I came to embrace the number one challenge with our babies and little ones was over-tiredness. I had worked on only two aspects in sleep training my babies and separated the two – nights and then days. In my work with Sleep Sense, it was about putting all of the pieces together along with understanding the guidelines of the wake time of our children. You hear about the circadian rhythm all the time.( But, I didn’t understand it until I met Dana)By understanding the natural dips in these rhythms and embracing and housing them helped me more clearly hone the skill of teaching my child how to sleep. Like teaching your child any new skill, like walking or swimming, they need help, guidance and practice in order for them to acquire the skill. I learned that I couldn’t sleep for my child and had to give them the gift of sleep by helping them develop and learn how to sleep on their own.
I often hear from my clients how simple the strategies that I teach and that they clearly just had no idea. I felt the exact same way. Once I heard and learned these things, it was like “LIGHTBULB, that makes so much sense but I had no idea!” This work is so deeply rooted in parental mindset. It’s not easy work to listen to your child cry, and while we aren’t promoting or suggesting “cry it out” method, I am helping parents learn to be the teachers and guides for their children and know how to identify the cues they are giving us. As parents, we often simply want to soothe our child and just get them calm. However, we are often doing them a disservice by not trying to more deeply understand and embrace what they might actually be trying to communicate with us.
I was so transformed by this work and started teaching parents how they can do the same. I’ve watched their sleep training take root, their children develop new patterns and their family units thrive too! I have since made a commitment to dedicate the rest of my professional life to helping other parents develop a customized plan and strategy that honours your child’s need and help them develop a more sound sleep schedule. Life is Sweet with Sleep and we all engage and learn when our minds and bodies have time to recuperate. Sleep does this for us. Since then, I’ve worked with many private clients, spoken in front of countless groups: I am living my dream of being a sleep consultant, working from home and spending time with my family. The truth about what’s standing in your way of success and how to get rid of it fast so you can start seeing results in record time.(and I’ll throw in a healthy dose of humour and inspiration, which always helps) We all need a little help, encouragement and guidance, so even when we are exhausted and have a huge sleep debt, we can make the best of it!
The “Life is Sweet with Sleep” programs were created for parents who are absolutely excited and dead serious about achieving the gift of sleep for their family. It means not running around all day and night beating yourself up and saying “I just don’t know what to do anymore to get my baby to sleep”, “I’ve tried everything and read every book out there and it’s not working for us” and “ I just don’t want to struggle day and night to get my baby happily to sleep”. This was created for you to put systems in place within a few weeks (sometimes days), which will lead you to having a sleeping baby day and night and you too will have the sleep you need to conquer your day. You will know when your little one is tired and ready for bedtime or nap time and be able to distinguish your baby’s needs for eating, playing and sleeping.
Being a sleep deprived parent myself, I’m known to work best with other sleep deprived parents, people who are committed to their success no matter what. Who are super – ready to get going and just want to know exactly what steps to take to get their little one sleeping. My clients often tell me – “just tell me what to do and I’ll do it!!” Consider what you’ll do with me to gain your sleep back with everything you need to know about your little one’s sleep. You will be expected to take serious and consistent action. No excuses, just a very positive way of thinking and full on support while you achieve your incredibly exciting goal of SLEEP for you and your little one.
Please know that I’m very selective in who I work with and I cherry-pick my clients, choosing to (gently) turn away people who aren’t suited for my programs and won’t get the results for which they would have signed up for. (It wouldn’t be fair to them.) The Life is Sweet with Sleep programs are NOT for those who have no money coming in and are absolutely, financially desperate, at least not right away. It’s been my experience that people in financial crisis do not trust the recommendations I give them and do not do the work (probably because they spend so much time worrying about where they are going to get next month’s rent check or mortgage payment) If you fall within this category, it’s absolutely OK. We’ve all been in times of financial crisis at one point or another.

We’ll probably just not work well together and I wouldn’t want you to waste your time or money. Is that fair?

That all depends on you and your little one and how well you follow your plan and my guidance. Some families see instant results within the first few nights, and other families find that their little one is stronger willed and it takes them longer. My programs are designed by age and goals and you should see amazing results within 2 to 3 weeks of implementing your new plan. Never be discouraged if your little one takes more time than another little one. We work together to make sure we are doing everything we need to, to move forward and get your family sleeping.
Do all of your homework. Follow your plan. Listen to my guidance. Be committed. Understand that this is a process, a proven one, that works if you take action and implement all of the steps.
